Former state trooper charged after caregiver assaulted

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — A former South Carolina Highway Patrol master trooper injured in crash has been charged with assaulting his caregiver, authorities said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Tuesday that 63-year-old Wayne Heinz LaBounty is charged with first-degree assault and battery in connection with a Nov. 21 incident in Lexington County.

According to an incident report, the victim told deputies the alleged assault occurred while she was providing in-home care to LaBounty near the end of a scheduled shift.
