Emotions run high during Staten Island manslaughter sentencing. Matriarch forgives, others storm out

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In a lot of ways, the violent and untimely death of Jennira Roundtree outside the West Brighton Houses is a story about the challenges of motherhood amid unforgiving surroundings. The sacrifices, the dangers, the joy and the pain.

The defendant in the case, Jasmin Thompson, 26, of New Brighton, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison, after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter.

Justice Alexander B. Jeong handed down the sentence, which comes with five years of post-release supervision, in state Supreme Court, St. George, on Wednesday.
