Staten Island civic leader has idea for this narrow 2-way street — but DOT isn’t buying it

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Residents and drivers on a narrow two‑way street on the East Shore say it has become a safety hazard, with problems that have persisted for years.

The section of Laconia Avenue, which runs from Garretson Avenue in Dongan Hills to Quintard Street in South Beach, is plagued by heavy traffic, recurring accidents, driver confusion and a lack of parking.

The roadway varies in width, with some areas barely fitting a single vehicle at a time and others offering no room for sidewalks or parked cars.

“There’s no parking, and also the traffic, a heavy amount of traffic. There’s road rage, there’s mirrors being broken during accidents because how tight it is,” said Joseph McAllister, the president of the South Beach Civic Association…
