New lawsuit filed against Llano Cemetery alleges incorrect burial of family member

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – A new lawsuit was filed Tuesday against Amarillo’s historic Llano Cemetery, now the third in recent months accusing its management of burying a person in the wrong place.

According to documents filed in the 251st Judicial District Court in Randall County, Llano Cemetery is being sued for allegedly burying a person’s family member in the wrong plot in April 2024. The lawsuit said the person was caused emotional distress due to the incorrect burial and during the months it took to re-bury their family member in the correct plot.

The lawsuit claims Llano Cemetery allegedly did not “respect the sanctity of the grave” that was purchased by the person and negligently buried their family member in the wrong grave. Further, the lawsuit claims Llano Cemetery violated its duties owed to the person in its “Negligent Mishandling of A Corpse,” despite the authorization to only bury the person’s family member in the specific grave that had been purchased.

The lawsuit demands a jury trial and is seeking compensatory damages for payment of services to Llano Cemetery, damages for past and future mental anguish, court costs, and “other general relief.”…
