Huntsville Police to conduct April 17 checkpoint targeting impaired driving, illegal activity

The Huntsville Police Department will conduct a traffic safety checkpoint Friday, April 17, as part of an ongoing effort to deter impaired driving and enhance roadway safety across the city.

The operation, led by the department’s DUI Task Force, will focus on identifying impaired drivers while also addressing other potential violations, including illegal drugs and firearms offenses. Officials said the checkpoint is designed to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and improve overall public safety.

“Our first safety checkpoint of 2026 resulted in eight arrests within the first 2 ½ hours,” said Sgt. Antonio Shorter of the DUI Task Force. “That kind of result shows why these operations matter. We are able to quickly identify dangerous drivers, remove them from the roadway and help prevent serious crashes before they happen.”…
