Toledo Women Lose Access to Addiction Treatment Beds After Facility Closure

A shortage of treatment capacity is disrupting access to substance abuse rehabilitation services for women in Toledo, following the closure of a dedicated women’s unit at the Lucas County Correctional Treatment Facility. The development has left female offenders without immediate placement options in residential treatment programs, raising concerns among court officials about gaps in care.

The East Central Avenue facility, which provides rehabilitation services for felony offenders, phased out its women’s unit in January, according to local authorities. The closure means that, until alternative arrangements are secured through other community-based providers, women processed through Toledo Municipal Court are unable to participate in the court’s Regional Addiction Diversion Program.

The diversion program is designed to offer treatment as an alternative to incarceration for individuals struggling with substance abuse issues.
