Details released in fatal backcountry crash involving motorcycle, semi truck

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — A motorcyclist was killed last weekend in a head-on collision with a semi-truck on State Route 78 near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 10:15 a.m. when a 35-year-old man from El Centro was driving a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia westbound on SR-78. At the same time, a 67-year-old man from Redlands was riding a Norton Commando motorcycle eastbound on the highway.

Investigators say the semi-truck veered into oncoming traffic and entered the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the motorcycle. For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner ultimately collided head-on with the motorcycle and the rider was ejected upon impact.

Meanwhile, the semi truck continued traveling westbound briefly before veering off the roadway and crashing into a rock embankment on the north shoulder…
