Burton firefighters battle fires despite burn ban

Burton firefighters continued to see trash fires April 21 despite a statewide burn ban which has been in effect since April 17.

Although the South Carolina Forestry Commission issued a burn ban which went into effect April 17, the Burton Fire Department and other agencies continue to battle various fires.

“Despite The South Carolina Forestry Commission Burning Ban, the Burton Fire Department responded to two trash fires April 21, which is also in violation of the Beaufort County Government SC Outdoor Burning Ordinance, bringing the total number of trash and illegal fires since the Burn Ban went into effect to seven,” Burton Fire District Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Byrne said. “Trash fires are not just a fire hazard but a respiratory and health hazard for the entire community, and also a violation of SC air pollution ordinances which can carry heavy fines.”…
