Mulch pile fire at Jasper County facility caused by spontaneous combustion, officials confirm

JASPER COUNNTY, S.C. (WTOC) – Tropical Trash crews responded to a mulch pile fire at Tropical Trash on Highway 462 in Jasper County.

The Fire Marshal’s Office responded and found a mulch pile burning that was piled too high. Officials confirmed spontaneous combustion caused the fire. The Fire Marshal’s Office said the facility was not in compliance because the pile was too long, too high and too wide. Piles are supposed to be no longer than 25 feet.

The fire has since been put out. This comes during a statewide burn ban in South Carolina…
