Abbott tells Texas cities to work with ICE or lose millions in grants

(NewsNation) – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is threatening to take away millions in grant money from Dallas, Austin and Houston if they interfere with ICE officers and their immigration work.

About $150 million is on the line for three of the biggest cities in the Lone Star State if their police violate Texas law and interfere with ICE operations. On Wednesday, the Dallas Police Department said it was adjusting the wording of its orders to align with the state criminal code. However, officers will not ask people about their immigration status when they are detained.

Houston had at least $110 million in grants at risk, but the city’s leadership reversed course Wednesday and revised an ordinance that didn’t comply with Texas state law by limiting police cooperation with federal immigration agents. Houston’s city attorney says officers will still not be expected to detain people or prolong traffic stops just because of immigration warrants.

In the meantime, Austin appears to be taking the path of least resistance, saying discussions are ongoing as city leaders try to avoid the same funding penalties while protecting their local policies. Its deadline is Thursday, with city leadership optimistic that a compromise is possible…
