Idaho Statesman employees’ union authorizes strike against owner McClatchy

The union representing 19 employees at the Idaho Statesman has voted to authorize a strike against parent company McClatchy.

A statement from the union Thursday morning said 90% of union members of the Idaho and Washington Newsguilds “signed a pledge to go on strike against McClatchy.” The California-based company owns five papers in the two states. In addition to the Statesman, McClatchy owns papers in Tacoma, Tri-Cities, Olympia, and Bellingham, Washington. The statement did not note when a strike could commence.

McClatchy also owns national lifestyle magazines Us Weekly and Woman’s World. Media publication Status News reported Wednesday that Us Weekly told staff on Monday it would lay off half of its workforce.
