DELMAR, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A new multi-use path has officially opened in the Town of Bethlehem. Town and local elected officials celebrated the open of the Cherry Avenue Extension path with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.

The 10-foot-wide path was created to strengthen connections between the hamlet of Delmar, the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail and the growing commercial corridor in Slingerlands. Residents and visitors can utilize the path for safer and easier way to walk, bike and explore the community.
The project was originally proposed by a Bethlehem resident. A $1,569,539 grant was secured from the New York State Department of Transportation to fund the fully ADA-accessible path.
A new crosswalk with a crossing light was also installed at the Cherry Avenue and Kenwood Avenue intersection. A highlight of the project area is the vibrant mural beneath the Cherry Avenue Extension bridge at the southern end of the path. It was created through the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy’s ART on the Rail Trail initiative in partnership with Albany County.
“Walkability is one of the things that makes Bethlehem such a great place to live and work,” saidTown Supervisor David VanLuven. “This multi-use path makes it easier and safer for people towalk and ride to the many restaurants and businesses along New Scotland Ave in Slingerlands.”

The Cherry Avenue Extension Multi-Use Path project is part of a broader effort by the Town of Bethlehem. The town has built or restored more than 9.2 miles of sidewalks and multi-use paths over the past eight years.
