2 men arrested in connection with Austin copper theft

AUSTIN, Texas — Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing hundreds of pounds of copper wire.

The Austin Police Department (APD) said at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, patrol officers responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 2900 block of Robinson Avenue. The caller reported that two people were taking items from a rental truck to a pickup truck and “behaving suspiciously.”

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw two men near a U-Haul and a pickup. Both of the men initially denied knowing about the U-Haul, but during the investigation, officers found the pickup bed was filled with cut, heavy-gauge copper wire. APD also said the U-Haul had switched license plates, and investigators later learned it had been flagged in connection with previous burglary investigation(s). APD reported that the officers also “observed additional indicators consistent with metal theft.”…
