SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — A landfill fire continues to burn in the West Valley, and it could be several days before it’s extinguished.
The fire broke out around 7 a.m. Friday at WM’s Northwest Regional Landfill near 195th Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Surprise. Crews worked to extinguish the blaze for several hours before requesting additional support.
The size of the response grew late Friday morning into the early afternoon and the call was elevated to a second-alarm response. Other departments including Phoenix, Sun City, Glendale, Peoria, Buckeye, Avondale and Arizona Fire & Medical Authority (AFMA) were called in to assist.
