Spokane graduate dies in CIA anti-drug operation in Mexico

SPOKANE, Wash. — One of the CIA employees killed in Mexico grew up in Spokane. John D. Black was killed in a car crash last weekend.

Black was a Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University graduate. Paul Manfred, the vice principal for athletics and facilities at Gonzaga Prep, is also a former coach of Black. He described Black as an exceptional athlete and someone you wanted on your team. Manfred also said he was a smart and teachable kid.

The Associated Press reports that Black and one other CIA employee died in a vehicular crash. Two Mexican investigators were also killed. Mexican authorities say their convoy was returning from an operation to destroy the drug labs of criminal groups. The CIA confirmed its involvement on Tuesday…
