Old Austin landfill could soon power thousands of homes

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An old Austin landfill could soon power the city.

On Thursday, Austin City Council approved Austin Energy to begin negotiations for a new solar farm at the former Travis County dump.

The proposed solar farm could provide up to 8 megawatts of electricity, enough to power as many as 2,500 homes.

Supporters say the proposal helps Austin grow its local energy supply while improving reliability and sustainability.
