Tennessee lawmakers pass bill expanding when deadly force can be used on private property

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A new bill passed by the Tennessee General Assembly would expand when individuals can legally use deadly force on private property.

Supporters say the measure empowers residents to defend what they’ve worked hard to earn, while critics warn it could blur the line between lawful self-defense and criminal behavior.

Defense attorney Robin Flores says the bill would change long-standing Tennessee law.

“I don’t see anything good coming out of this,” Flores says. “Statutory provision sets out a clear legal barrier that you can’t use deadly force to simply protect property. That goes back almost 100 years.”…
