Essentials drive collects new items for Idaho foster children

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Foster + Heart is holding its annual essentials drive, an event designed to provide necessary items to foster children entering a new home. Many of these children come into care without access to their belongings, and just the clothes on their backs.

Foster parents are financially responsible for children coming into their care for the first thirty days. Foster + Heart’s outreach coordinator, Taylor Mcpherson, said that the organization hopes to alleviate some of the financial burden so the family can focus on helping the child acclimate to their new environment.

“When they come into foster care, they don’t usually have items that they need like underwear, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair products,” Mcpherson said. “So, when the children enter a foster parent’s home, that financial responsibility falls on the foster parent to meet those needs. And they’re also trying to meet the emotional needs of the child who just endured a lot of trauma and a lot of confusion.”…
