Proposed Malta zoning map removes many farms from land conservation zones

MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Malta Town Board discussed a new version of a contested proposed zoning map that includes land conservation zones intended to primarily protect the Drummond Creek watershed on Monday. However, farmers still have concerns.

Over multiple versions the city has reduced the amount of agricultural properties on the map designated as land conservation zones. Now parcels designated in the agricultural district or that have agricultural property class codes have been removed.

“We’re in no rush, we’ll continue to work on this until we get it right,” said Malta Town Supervisor Cynthia Young.

Residents at the meeting who spoke during the public comment said New York State already has enough protections for watershed parcels, and it’s unnecessary to add extra restrictions…
