Crew Member Falls Overboard Near Cape Cod, Coast Guard Ends Search

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a crew member fell overboard from a cruise ship just off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, prompting an extensive but ultimately unsuccessful search by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The incident occurred aboard the Norwegian Breakaway during its journey from Bermuda to Boston. Early Sunday morning, emergency teams launched a search after passengers were alerted to the man overboard situation approximately 12 miles from Wellfleet, Cape Cod, based on surveillance footage showing the crew member falling into the ocean.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England quickly deployed a rescue helicopter and personnel from Coast Guard Station Provincetown to scour the waters. A second helicopter joined the operation later that afternoon, but the search was suspended shortly after midday, pending new information.

The Norwegian Breakaway arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal just before noon, with passengers receiving a letter explaining the delay. The letter emphasized the ship’s commitment to safety, stating that the crew worked closely with maritime authorities throughout the search and that such situations demand the vessel’s full attention before continuing the voyage.

One passenger, Rebecca Durandisse, described the unsettling experience to CBS News. She recounted being awakened by a light and loud noises in her stateroom early Sunday morning before the alert about the man overboard was made.

This event follows recent maritime concerns in the region, including the disappearance of Lynette Hooker, 55, who vanished on April 4 while traveling by dinghy in the Bahamas. Authorities are investigating her case, and a man has been arrested and is currently being questioned in connection with her disappearance. The suspect, Brian Hooker, has denied any wrongdoing and is cooperating with investigators.

The Coast Guard and cruise officials continue to prioritize passenger and crew safety as investigations proceed.
