Volunteers deploy 550 oyster reef bags to restore marsh, protect Lowcountry coast

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — What started as piles of discarded oyster shells is now becoming a critical line of defense along the Lowcountry coast.

Along Oldtown Creek, volunteers and environmental groups deployed 550 oyster reef bags in an effort to slow erosion, restore marshland and protect nearby communities from worsening environmental impacts.

The reefs, made from recycled oyster shells collected from restaurants and the public, are part of a larger, long-term restoration effort targeting areas that have already seen significant marsh loss…
