Greensboro Police: ‘It happens here, it happens everywhere’. Thief steals a check out of the mailbox, changes the amount & cashes it.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s happened again. One of your neighbors did something very common. They put a check to pay a bill in the mailbox and raised the flag for the postman to pick it up. But that check got stolen, and then it got ‘washed’. Of course, it was cashed to a scammer for more than the original amount.

“They put that chemical on there, and it erases it and allows the person to actually write in whatever they want on there, even the amount,” said Greensboro Police Detective Shatonie Little, Financial Fraud Division.

The $100 check written to pay a bill now becomes a $1,000 check written out to the scammer. It’s called check washing…
