City of Shellsburg says park does not need to close in response to group’s safety concerns

SHELLSBURG, Iowa (KCRG) – Shellsburg Mayor Shadoe Vogt says that the city’s playground has been cleared by an inspector and will stay open. This comes after a nonprofit group warned parents that the equipment was unsafe and asked the city to remove it.

The nonprofit, Shellsburg Parks and Events, came to city council after its inspection found sharp metal fragments protruding from the deck, bolts sticking out, and a slide with visible cracks.

The group is also looking to raise money to rebuild the park. They estimate equipment alone will cost $190,000…
