A commercial truck driver who disappeared amid a suspected hijacking while transporting vehicles has been found dead in a coastal area of Georgia, the FBI announced Wednesday.
Alejandro Jacomino Gonzalez, 41, was last seen in the early morning hours of April 17 at a rest area along Interstate 95 south in Brevard County, Florida. Later that day, his truck was discovered nearly 300 miles away in Port Wentworth, Georgia, raising suspicions about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Officials reported that three of the vehicles Gonzalez was hauling have since been recovered in Florida, but several others remain missing. Federal investigators revealed that Gonzalez had collected multiple vehicles from the Port of Brunswick and was en route to Miami for delivery.
GPS data indicated that after leaving the rest area, the truck briefly continued south before reversing direction and heading north. Authorities lost contact with Gonzalez shortly thereafter.
In the days following his disappearance, the FBI sought public assistance by requesting surveillance footage, photographs, and witness accounts from anyone present near the Grant-Valkaria rest area between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. on April 17.
Gonzalez, originally from Cuba, was described as having distinctive tattoos, including a full sleeve on his left arm, a tattoo on his lower right arm, and the word “Elisia” inked on his right forearm.
According to Gonzalez’s cousin, Juan Carlos Forcade, the FBI informed Gonzalez’s wife on Tuesday that his body had been found in Georgia. The FBI later confirmed the identity but has not released details regarding the cause of death.
The investigation is being handled jointly by the FBI Field Offices in Atlanta and Tampa. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-225-5324 or submit tips online.
