15 dogs found in Berkeley County garage after odor complaint; rescue strains shelter space

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — Neighbors who reported a foul odor they feared could be from decomposing bodies instead led authorities to a large-scale animal rescue in Berkeley County, according to the Charleston Animal Society.

Deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to the complaint and traced the smell to a garage, where they discovered 15 dogs in need of immediate medical attention, the animal shelter said.

“We immediately started processing the dogs and giving them exams and vaccines at Charleston Animal Society Berkeley Campus,” said Aldwin Roman, vice president of operations and strategy at Charleston Animal Society. “We are still evaluating their condition.”…
