Paula Deens Surprising Favorite Part of the Kentucky Derby Isnt Food or Drink

With the Kentucky Derby just days away, celebrity chef Paula Deen shared that her favorite part of the event isn’t the famed Southern fare or the iconic mint juleps, but rather the fashion on display.

As Louisville prepares to welcome tens of thousands for the historic horse race, mint juleps-crafted with Kentucky bourbon, simple syrup, crushed ice, and fresh mint-remain a staple of the celebration. Yet, Deen revealed in a recent interview that she’s most captivated by the stylish attendees.

“I love looking at the ladies and the gentlemen,” Deen said. “They really embrace that Old South style with their clothes. The men look so dapper, and I adore all the hats and outfits.”

Having attended the Derby before, Deen shared that her favorite vantage point would be right at the entrance gate, where she could watch the crowd pass by in full Derby Day splendor. Reflecting on a past visit to Churchill Downs, she recalled the muddy conditions and the powerful sensation of horse hooves pounding the track, noting that rain often accompanies the event.

While the horses take center stage, the Derby’s culinary traditions are not to be overlooked. Deen called mint juleps “the star of the Derby” but recommended another Kentucky classic-the Hot Brown sandwich.

This open-faced creation layers roasted turkey, thick-cut bread, bacon, and rich Mornay sauce, originating from a Louisville hotel in the 1920s. Acknowledging its messiness, Deen even adapted the dish into a casserole for easier enjoyment.

Her ideal Derby Day menu features mint juleps, Hot Browns, hot cheese dips, fresh fruit, and of course, fried chicken. When asked if the event ever involves too much butter, Deen quickly dismissed the notion, humorously brandishing a butter-shaped stress reliever to make her point.

Ultimately, what makes a perfect Derby Day for Deen comes down to good weather and an exciting race. “I got to go two years ago, and the weather was beautiful,” she recalled. “That’s what you hope for when it’s time for the Derby-those two minutes of the most incredible race going.”
