Just days before co-chairing one of the fashion world’s most prestigious events, Lauren Sánchez Bezos traded her glamorous attire for a firefighter’s gear.
The media personality and philanthropist recently participated in a hands-on training session with New York City firefighters, in collaboration with the Leary Firefighters Foundation and the FDNY Foundation. The experience gave her a profound new respect for the dedication and courage required to protect the city.
“This was honestly the best prep I could have had for the Met Gala,” Sánchez Bezos shared in an Instagram video that has garnered significant attention. She described the session as a humbling and intense introduction to emergency response, far more impactful than any red carpet rehearsal.
During the drills, she faced real-life scenarios, including a “safety burn” – a controlled fire exercise designed to test both physical endurance and mental focus. “You could get burnt, feel the heat when you quench your thirst, or experience high alert,” she explained. The demanding training clearly left a strong impression on her.
Her post received an outpouring of support from followers, who applauded her for using her platform in meaningful ways. One commenter highlighted her recent children’s book as another example of her positive influence, while another urged for more resources to combat fires.
Reflecting on the experience, Sánchez Bezos wrote, “It gave me a small glimpse into the strength, discipline, and courage firefighters bring to their work. In honor of International Firefighters’ Day on May 4th, thank you to firefighters everywhere for your service.”
This tribute comes ahead of Monday’s Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Sánchez Bezos and her husband Jeff Bezos will serve as co-chairs alongside Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams. The event, which supports the Anna Wintour Costume Center, embraces this year’s theme of “Costume Art.”
Recently, the couple also attended a White House state dinner honoring Britain’s King Charles and Queen Camilla, where Sánchez Bezos made headlines wearing a striking display of emerald jewelry.
Yet, it’s clear that the firehouse experience left a lasting mark. In the video, she exhales with relief and says simply, “Life safe,” underscoring the profound respect she gained for the men and women who risk their lives daily to keep the city safe.
