UAB performs Alabama’s first deceased donor bone marrow transplant

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A team at UAB performed the state’s first deceased donor bone marrow transplant, expanding treatment options for patients with blood cancer.

UAB says physicians at the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine led the procedure in collaboration with specialists across leukemia care, radiation oncology, transplant coordination, and cellular therapy.

Nearly 20,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with blood cancers that could require a bone marrow transplant. Normally, living donors are needed, and finding the right match can take critical time that some patients don’t have…
