Community holds event honoring Malachi Fennicks

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — On Monday evening, the Bethel Northside Church in Schenectady held an event for Malachi Fennicks. On April 24, Fennicks’ body was found in the Mohawk River. He had been missing since March 2. Malachi’s mother, Nikol Fennicks, is calling for improved mental health services following her son’s death.

“This could have been avoided,” said Fennicks. “I really feel it could have been avoided.”

In Schenectady County, Public Health Services can connect residents with mental health services and residents can connect people with mental health support. A directory of local mental health resources is available on the county’s website. The county shared the following statement with NEWS10:

“For anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available 24/7. Residents can call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or reach local crisis services through Ellis Medicine Crisis Services at (518) 243-4000 or Northern Rivers Mobile Crisis Services at (518) 426-2600.”…
