Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs and those famous crinkle-cut fries are edging closer to the San Antonio area, and the latest activity in one fast-growing suburb suggests the wait may not last much longer.
In Schertz, the long-anticipated Portillo’s is entering a new phase, one that finally looks like the finish line. Crews have begun installing exterior signage across the building, transforming what was once a generic structure into something instantly recognizable. It’s a noticeable leap forward from just a few months ago, when the site still lacked the brand’s signature look.
Beyond the signage, the rest of the property is coming together quickly. The drive-thru lane appears fully built and wraps neatly around the restaurant, while a newly completed outdoor patio signals the space is nearly ready to welcome both dine-in customers and on-the-go traffic off I-35. Together, the updates give the clearest indication yet that the project is nearing completion.
A Portillo’s representative told MySA earlier this year the Chicago-based chain was targeting a summer debut, and the current pace of construction suggests that timeline is still within reach.
The road here hasn’t been without delays. State filings initially outlined a roughly $6 million build with an expected completion in late 2025, but months of limited activity sparked questions about whether the project had stalled. In recent weeks, however, steady progress has put those concerns to rest.
Once open, the restaurant will anchor part of the growing Schertz Station development, joining nearby names like Dave’s Hot Chicken, Chipotle and CAVA…
