MS auditor demands Hernando clerk return $17K in missing funds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The court clerk of the city of Hernando, Mississippi, was sent a demand letter from the state auditor stating she owes over $17,000 in court payments.

According to the letter, the demanded amount of $17,578.32 includes funds that were collected as court payments and are currently unaccounted for under the supervision of Court Clerk Cassaundra Perry.

“Your acts and omissions include but are not limited to violations of law by failing to deposit all court collections with the municipal treasurer or equivalent officer,” said the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor.

State Auditor Shad White said in the letter that if Perry fails to pay the amount within 30 days, a lawsuit will be filed.
