Local organizations prepare summer food programs to help families

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — As the school year comes to an end, local organizations across the area are preparing for an increased demand for food assistance during the summer months.

Leaders with Fill with Hope and Snack Pak 4 Kids said many children who rely on school breakfasts and lunches during the school year can face food insecurity once summer break begins.

“We have a saying here. Hunger doesn’t take the summer off,” Dyron Howell, founder of Snack Pak 4 Kids, said.

According to Howell, the organization surveys students in Amarillo ahead of summer break, and about 70% of students surveyed so far reported they will still need help accessing food over the summer…
