Amarillo Fire Dept. Senior Program begins this month

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Fire Department announced it is launching a program that aims to help older adults in their homes.

According to AFD, this month’s Senior Program is designed to help senior adults stay safe, independent, and confident at home. Starting on May 12, AFD will host a six-week series of classes from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday at Warford Community Center.

During the program, participants will be provided with practical safety tips and education tailored specifically for older adults, including:

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms,
  • Proper use of fire extinguishers,
  • Identifying and reducing trip hazards,
  • Safe storage of household chemicals,
  • Address common scams that often target senior adults, offering guidance on how to recognize and avoid them.
