Jefferson County Jail inmate dies following treatment for ‘apparent medical event’

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — An inmate at the Jefferson County Jail died after being taken to the hospital for an “apparent medical event” earlier this week.

Jonathan Tremaine Maul, 39, of Birmingham reportedly began suffering this ailment while in his cell at approximately 4:51 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. After being taken to UAB Hospital, he was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. the same day.

Jail records indicate that Maul had been booked into the jail on April 27 on a warrant for failing to appear in a court hearing related to third-degree burglary charges. According to court records, Maul had previously been arrested July 6, 2022 for allegedly breaking into an unoccupied WingOut Express on Avenue V to steal property.
