West Towne Mall area sees spike in vehicle break-ins, credit card fraud

MADISON, Wis. — The area around West Towne Mall has seen a concerning rise in vehicle break-ins and credit card fraud since the start of the year, Madison police said Thursday.

Police said theives are taking credit or debit cards from unlocked vehicles parked at or near the Crunch Fitness location on Mineral Point Road. At least 20 cases have been reported since the year began.

In each case, police said a suspect tried to use the stolen card to make fraudulent purcases. In 10 cases, the suspect was successful and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars…
