Bakersfield police clear 7 Kern River encampments, remove 24 tons of trash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A multi-agency operation cleared seven homeless encampments along islands in the Kern River, removing more than 24 tons of trash, relocated several people to services, and led to one arrest, Bakersfield police said.

The BPD’s Special Operations Group deployed resources from multiple agencies for the cleanup on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Crews worked in the area between the Manor Street overcrossing and the North Chester Avenue overcrossing.

Authorities removed people, animals and trash from the islands. In all, 24.27 tons of trash were hauled away.

Four people accepted services from Flood Ministries and were moved to the Brundage Lane Navigation Center. One person was arrested for squatting and resisting arrest.
