Public shaming, criminal charges in Turnpike arsenal to tackle toll evasion

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is going after scofflaws taking advantage of the open-road tolling system it introduced in 2024, and that includes bringing criminal charges against certain alleged offenders.

The operator of the 241-mile toll road across northern Ohio last month released a list of 315 “rogue trucking companies” and independent owners it said each owed $5,000 or more in unpaid tolls. Overall, the commission said, truckers using E-ZPass lanes at four mainline toll plazas without toll transponders on board, then not paying resulting invoices, owed the turnpike nearly $5.2 million in tolls.

But that’s just one-third of the total unpaid tolls the Ohio Turnpike has totted up since April, 2024, when it introduced open-road tolling at those mainline plazas to allow most drivers to proceed at highway speed…
