WASHINGTON, D.C. (Valley News Live) — More than 245 North Dakota and Minnesota veterans arrived in Washington, D.C., on Friday to begin their Honor Flight journey, visiting memorials built to honor their service.
The trip began early Sunday morning with a police escort and bagpipe welcome at Hector International Airport in Fargo. A surprise awaited one veteran upon landing when his enlisted grandson met him at the gate.
“My grandpa is a pretty mellow person, so it’s not gonna be jumping up and down, but he looked pretty happy to see me,” said Pfc. Gabe Sagvold, grandson of Staff Sgt. John Waliser, U.S. Air Force. “I was happy to see him too.”
