Pete Hegseth Faces Embarrassment as Wrong Title Shows Up at Senate Hearing

Additional Coverage:

During Tuesday’s Senate budget committee hearing, Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense under Donald Trump, found himself the target of sharp ridicule after an apparent mix-up left his official title off the name placard in front of him. Instead of “Secretary of War,” the sign read “Defense Secretary,” reflecting ongoing efforts by Hegseth and the Trump administration to rebrand the department since their return to office in 2025.

Hegseth testified alongside General Dan Caine, addressing questions regarding the escalating costs of the ongoing conflict with Iran and the proposed $1.5 billion Pentagon budget. While the hearing maintained an overall respectful tone, tensions flared notably with South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal supporter of the war effort, who aggressively challenged Hegseth’s responses.

Graham’s frustration was on full display as he grilled Hegseth over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, specifically referencing “900 pounds of 60% enriched uranium” allegedly hidden by Iran. When Hegseth declined to comment on classified details, Graham dismissed the caution, asserting the information was widely known. He accused previous administrations under Obama and Biden of failing to prevent Iran’s nuclear advancements and accused the current leadership of allowing Iran to become a “threshold nuclear nation.”

The senator also criticized the response to Iranian missile attacks on the U.S.-UK military base on Diego Garcia, sharply admonishing the committee for failing to stop Iran from developing long-range missile capabilities. His pointed questions and raised voice underscored his dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of the conflict.

Adding to the tense atmosphere, Hegseth was briefly disrupted by a protester who vocally condemned the administration’s war policies and was removed from the hearing. The protester accused Hegseth and the administration of complicity in war crimes, prompting an uncomfortable moment during the proceedings.

Despite these challenges, the hearing continued, focusing on the complex and costly realities of the Iran conflict and the Pentagon’s budget needs moving forward.
