Beginning Wednesday, ‘high-risk’ purchases will be blocked on SNAP cards

Beginning on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, all Ohioans receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and making online or out-of-state purchases must unlock their benefits card before proceeding.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), according to a release explaining the change, is implementing this updated security feature in an effort to ensure SNAP dollars are secure.

As part of the new security, Electronic Benefits Transfer cards, also known as EBT cards, will default to automatically blocking any “high-risk transactions,” which include online and out-of-state purchases…
