Byron Center man sentenced for tax evasion after he fails to report $3.4M of income

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Byron Center man was sentenced to prison for tax evasion.

51-year-old James Philip Scholten was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison, and ordered to pay over $860,000 in restitution to the IRS, along with three years of supervised release after his prison term.

According to court records, Scholten pled guilty to tax evasion, and admitted that he failed to report $3.4 million of income generated through the sale of scrap material over 13 years.

He stole highly valuable scrap material from his employer, and used the proceeds to enrich himself and finance a lifestyle he could not otherwise afford, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy VerHey’s office.
