Consumers Energy plans to install 2 injection wells to handle wastewater at Ottawa County coal plant

PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Consumers Energy has submitted applications to install two injection wells at the J.H. Campbell coal plant in Ottawa County.

According to documents presented by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the application requests a permit from EGLE’s Geologic Resources Management Division to add two wells to the site near Hiawatha Drive and Croswell Street.

The wells, dubbed JHC-1 and JHC2, would hold nonhazardous leachate generated from the coal combustion’s residual landfill and extracted groundwater from the property. According to the proposal, the material would be pumped down into porous rock formations approximately a mile below the ground.

“The wells are proposed to operate at maximum combined volume of 300 gallons per minute, with a maximum anticipated injection pressure of 593 psig,” EGLE states. “The wells are anticipated to be in use for a minimum of 50 years.”…
