RIO RANCHO — The latest scam is using court orders from the state of New Mexico.
The Rio Rancho Police Department warns that though the letterhead appears official, it is not what it seems.
“Don’t fall for the latest scam, which is now using what appears to be official State of New Mexico Letterhead and quick QR code links. To check authenticity, you should independently look up the phone number to the court listed on the document and inquire with them the legitimacy of the document,” an RRPD social media post states. “DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER OR SCAN THE QR CODE ON THE DOCUMENT YOU RECEIVED.”
The document has a couple of telltale signs that people can look out for, according to the post.
One of the violations on the document is a “toll evasion.” However, as RRPD notes, New Mexico doesn’t have toll roads. Another note is that courts will never ask for payment via QR code…
