TOLEDO, Ohio — Matthew Exton, the Toledo man accused of attempting to shoot a patron inside a downtown Toledo restaurant, will stand trial after a second competency evaluation made him ineligible for a not guilty by reason of insanity plea.
According to Lucas County Common Pleas Court records, Exton’s attorneys filed a motion for a competency evaluation on Oct. 27, 2025. This was after he was deemed competent to stand trial on June 4 the same year.
On Tuesday, May 12, following numerous pretrial hearings, court records state Exton was found to not meet the criteria for an insanity plea. An additional pretrial hearing was scheduled for June 24 and a trial was scheduled for July 20, both at 9 a.m…
