Bob Baffert Faces Heartbreak and Victory in One Day at Preakness Stakes

Additional Coverage:

On a day marked by stark contrasts at Pimlico Race Course in May 2023, legendary trainer Bob Baffert experienced the full spectrum of horse racing’s highs and heartbreaks. Within hours, tragedy and triumph unfolded, making it one of the most challenging days of his celebrated career.

Tragedy struck early when Baffert’s horse, Havnameltdown, suffered a catastrophic ankle injury during the Chick Lang Stakes, a preliminary race leading up to the Preakness Stakes. Jockey Luis Saez was thrown from the horse near the top of the stretch and was promptly taken to Sinai Hospital, where he was reported to be stable and conscious. Despite efforts to care for Havnameltdown, veterinarians determined the injury was too severe, and the horse was humanely euthanized at the track.

Dr. Scott Hay, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, described the injury as “really severe” and noted that immediate euthanasia was necessary due to the horse’s condition. The news dealt a heavy blow to Baffert and his team, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“We are just devastated,” Baffert said in a statement. “This is a shock to everyone at our barn who love and care for these horses every day.

Havnameltdown was obviously hit pretty hard coming out of the gate. We don’t know if that contributed to the injury, but we will be fully transparent with those reviewing this terrible accident.”

Reflecting on the suddenness of such tragedies, Baffert added, “We never had an issue with him. We are so careful with all these horses, and it still happens.

It is something that is disheartening. There is nothing worse than coming back and the stall is empty.

He is a nice horse. He could not have been doing any better.

It’s sickening. I am in shock.”

Later that same day, the mood shifted as Baffert celebrated a historic victory. National Treasure surged from the gate to claim the lead in the 148th Preakness Stakes, holding off a strong challenge from Blazing Sevens and finishing ahead of Kentucky Derby winner Mage, who placed third. Jockey John Velazquez, a veteran rider, earned his first Preakness win guiding the horse to the finish line.

For Baffert, this marked an unprecedented eighth Preakness victory, further cementing his legacy in the sport. Yet, amid the triumph, the emotional weight of the day was undeniable.

“This horse deserved it,” Baffert told NBC Sports, his voice tinged with emotion. “We all thought it was a good horse. It’s been a tough day.”

The 2023 Preakness Stakes will be remembered not only for the record-breaking win but also for the somber reminder of the risks inherent in horse racing, as the community mourned the loss of a promising competitor.
