Opening statements begin in murder trial of Larry Millete

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Opening statements are set to begin Monday in the murder trial of Larry Millete, as prosecutors prepare to present a case built largely on circumstantial evidence in the disappearance of his wife, Maya Millete.

Maya Millete’s body has never been found, and there is no confirmed cause of death, creating unique challenges for both prosecution and defense teams. A jury of seven women and five men was selected to hear the case.

“What’s interesting, the prosecution has to put out an opening statement that’s going to explain two things, (A) not only you know what happened but who did it,” said criminal and civil attorney Brian Watkins, who is not involved in the case…
