Union Pacific ‘Big Boy’ train to stop in Ohio on eastern trek

As part of America’s 250th celebration, Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 locomotive will continue its coast-to-coast tour with an eastern leg, including several stops in Ohio.

The 4014 is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, according to Union Pacific’s website, and is one of eight remaining of its kind. Big Boys are 133 feet long and weigh 1.2 million pounds. Twenty-five were commissioned for the Union Pacific Railroad and used to haul equipment during World War II.

The locomotive will be making the following stops in the Buckeye State:

  • June 6: Continental near Oak Street and Main Street from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.; and Fostoria at Fostoria Iron Triangle Railpark from 2-2:15 p.m.
  • June 8: Lorain near W. 11th St. and Reid Ave. from 1:15 p.m.-1:30 p.m.; and Euclid at Chardon Road Crossing from 2:30 p.m.-3 p.m.
  • July 12: Struthers, east of South Bridge Street from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • July 13: Rocky River at 19060 Depot St. from 12:45 p.m.-1:15 p.m.
  • July 14: Fostoria at Fostoria Automotive Distribution Center, 3101 North Township Rd. 47. This date is a public display event lasting from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • July 15: Continental from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
