FIRST ALERT: Summer Heat Sticks Around Before Wet Weather Moves In

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Western Carolinas bask in summer-like warmth through Wednesday, but a shift in the weather pattern sets the stage for unsettled conditions and a cooldown late-week.

Today & Wednesday: Hot, Hot, Hot

Tuesday is another hot one, just like Monday. Mostly sunny skies continue as temperatures climb into the upper 80s to low 90s all across the Western Carolinas. Make sure you’re staying hydrated and take frequent breaks from the heat, especially if you have to work outside. Try to get in your exercise in the morning or evening and avoid the early to mid afternoon.

Tonight, clouds increase slightly with lows dipping to the low to mid 60s.

Wednesday’s even a little hotter and we could see our first 90° day of the year at GSP. Highs are in the upper 80s in the mountains to the low 90s for most of the Upstate. It’s also quite humid as the moisture ticks up a bit ahead of a cold front approaching from the northwest. We start off mostly sunny, but by late afternoon, especially across the mountains, watch for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. Any storms that pop up appear fairly isolated.

Thursday: Rain Chances Ramp Up

The cold front pushes into the region Thursday, triggering scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon. Temperatures stay hot during the day with highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Friday: Cooler, Wetter

Expect a noticeable cooldown Friday. Temperatures drop noticeably from Thursday, settling in the upper 70s in the Upstate and the mid 70s in the mountains. The cold front settles just to the south of our area, and showers and thunderstorms continue throughout the day. It won’t be a washout but keep your umbrella handy for any outdoor activities.

The Weekend: Showers Linger

The unsettled pattern sticks around. Showers remain likely each day through the holiday weekend, with the added threat of thunderstorms developing in the afternoon as a series of weak systems and the remnants of the cold front continue to trigger moisture. Temperatures are right around where we should be for late May, climbing into the low 80s in the Upstate and upper 70s to low 80s in the mountains. High humidity makes it feel muggy despite the cooler temps.

Here’s what this means for your week: your outdoor plans look great through Wednesday, but bring an umbrella starting Thursday and keep it handy through at least Monday whether it’s for graduation parties or Memorial Day ceremonies. The rain doesn’t look heavy enough to bring meaningful relief to any drought concerns in the region, but it does prevent conditions from getting any worse…
