Parts of Rutherford County under voluntary water restrictions amid ‘severe’ drought

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Some Rutherford County residents are being asked to voluntarily reduce their water usage as parts of the area reach what the U.S. Drought Monitor classifies as “severe drought” status.

According to the Tennessee Public Water System, the voluntary restrictions affect some customers serviced by the Consolidated Utility District.

“When that water supply starts to drop like that, there’s a degradation in the water quality,” National Weather Service meteorologist Paige Barr told News 2. “Obviously, our drinking water gets treated, so when that degradation in water quality happens, that increases the amount of money that is having to be spent on treatment.”

Leaders said residents can lower their water usage by refraining from non-essential activities like washing sidewalks, refilling swimming pools or watering lawns. This past spring, Tennessee has been in a weakening La Niña and the dry air has been more predominant this year…
