Widespread power outages in Boston area as severe storm hits

As a severe storm blew through the Boston area on Tuesday, tens of thousands of people were left without power. Early reports of storm damage included a fire apparently sparked by lightning and tree damage.

The extent of the outages wasn’t immediately clear, but Eversource reported nearly 50,000 customers — 49,056 — without power in Boston. That represented just over 14% of all customers the utility serves in the city.

Nearby, Milton had 9,213 customers without power, Newton had 2,394, Ashland had 1,608 and Dedham 908, according to the utility’s outage map — the numbers were fluctuating by the minute as service went out for some and was restored for others…
